The Armenian Genocide
... a series of deadly acts against Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire, were organized by government authorities in the last decades of the 19th century and first decades of the 20th century. The most devastating massacres began in 1915 during World War I (1914-1918). These wartime atrocities have become known as the Armenian Genocide. 2. Summarize the 8 stages of genocide (according to Genocide Watch: the International Alliance to End Genocide. http://www.genocidewatch.org/genocide/8stagesofgenocide.html
3. Causes of the Armenian Genocide: Read the first section: "Summary of Events Leading up to the Genocide". As you read, list the causes identified: (There are approximately 3-4). http://www.armeniapedia.org/wiki/Armenian_Genocide
4. View the clip at : http://www.youtSKIPube.com/watch?v=QVQj0dbeVgU. This will give you some background on the genocide. a. Summarize how Peter Jennings describes the genocide. b. How does the speaker compare the Armenian Genocide to the German "Aryan Society" (at about 2:27)? (3-5 sentence summary is enough.)
5. On http://www.historyplace.com/worldhistory/genocide/index.html, click on the "Armenians in Turkey: 1915-1918 - 1,500,000 Deaths." While you are on this site: Click on the Related Maps (on the right). Get an idea of what geographical area we are looking at.
6. Read the info at: http://www.theforgotten.org/site/intro_eng.html Once the page loads, click the timeline. Click on 1915. (Use the back and more slide to advance the script). Read about the events of 1915. (Acknowledged as the beginning of the genocide). Summarize what happened in 1915.
7. Now click the IMAGES at http://www.armenian-genocide.org/photo_elder.html. (Warning: Some of these images are graphic...you DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS STEP). Reflect on these scenes in a paragraph summarizing your impressions.
