The French Revolution:
To complete this lesson:
1. Open a Word Document, Google doc, or Email to type your responses, then return to this page. Be sure to send the document or share your account when done.
2. There were many direct and indirect causes of the French Revolution. Social, political, and economic factors all played a role. Take a look at the web site: http://www.bonjourlafrance.com/france-facts/france-history/causes-of-the-french-revolution.htm. This site lists and explains many of the causes of the French Revolution. A. List them in your document, and choose one that YOU think is "THE" most important cause. Explain why you pick this one. Return here when you are done, and continue.
3. Next, we will look at the "Big Events" of the French Revolution; starting with the Oath of the Tennis Court. The Oath of the Tennis Court signified the beginning of the revolution. Why were the members of the Third Estate locked out of the assembly meeting? B. What was their "oath"?
4. Next, the Storming of the Bastille. July 14th will remain a day of French celebration. While not really a prison fortress at the time, the Bastille symbolized all the oppression the people of France were feeling and the economic suffering they endured. Go to this site and complete task one and two: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/lesson36.htm. Record your answers. A. Do you think these accounts are accurate? Why? Why not? B. Cut and paste one of the pictures of the Storming of the Bastille. Summarize this event.
5. Next, the March to Versailles. Even the women of France were determined to take a role in attempting to better their lives. Use this link to summarize the event. A. Do you think the women played a significant role? Why/Why not? Use evidence from the reading to support your conclusion. http://www.historywiz.com/womensmarch.htm.
6. The Reign of Terror signified a change in the revolution. The ideals of the Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen were forgotten, and terror ruled the day. Look at this link to answer the questions: http://www.historywiz.com/terror.htm
A. Who was the first victim of the terror? B. How many people lost their lives during this era? C. Who was noted as the leader of the Reign of Terror? D. How did the era come to an end? E. Why do you think this event signified a change in the revolution? Use evidence from the reading to support your conclusion.
